How would you feel if someone told you that you had to suffer physically and emotionally when you didn’t have to? Brittany Maynard had to move to another state just so that she had the option to die with dignity. I believe if someone wants to die, and they have good reason to, then they should be allowed to make the decision when to do it.
According to the death with dignity website, the organization “expands the freedom of all qualified terminally ill Americans to make their own end-of-life decisions, including how they die.” Someone who is going to die a painful death should be allowed to choose to end their lives on their own terms and not be forced to go through that pain. Brittany Maynard chose to die with dignity when she realized she was going to die a horrible and painful death. She and her family moved to Oregon just so that she could get the lethal medication as an option. She did end up taking it and avoiding the horrible symptoms that come with treating brain cancer. In an interview with Brittany Mayard with CNN, she was quoted saying “I've had the medication for weeks. I am not suicidal. If I were, I would have consumed that medication long ago. I do not want to die. But I am dying. And I want to die on my own terms.”
Everyone should have the right to choose how they spend the remainder of their life. If a person is terminally ill and the rest of there life is just having to watch yourself deteriorate and suffer both physically and emotionally then that person should be allowed to choose to die. They should have the right to have that choice. they might not end up choosing that but they deserve to have the choice for that option.
