According to my health textbook, Core Concepts in Health, contraceptives are defined as “any agent or method that can prevent conception” (Insel and Roth pg 119).
Here are a few examples of contraceptives:
One type of contraception is the female condom. A female condom is a pouch that is inserted into the vagina or anus before having sex. There are flexible rings on each side. The ring at the closed end keeps the pouch in the vagina and the ring at the open end stays outside of the vagina. If used correctly the female condom has a 95% effective rate.
Another kind of contraception is the sponge. The sponge is round, two inches in diameter, and is made of plastic foam and spermicide. The sponge is inserted into the vagina before sex and it covers the cervix. The sponge also blocks sperm and releases spermicide. The sponge has a 91% effective rate when used correctly. One of the benefits of it is that it can stay inserted for up to 24 hours.
Another type of contraception is sterilization. Sterilization is a procedure where a doctor closes or blocks off a woman fallopian tubes. This can be done by cutting, clipped, clamped, sealed by an electric current or rings are used to close them off. There is a method called hysteroscopic sterilization where no incision is required. Another way to do it is with a hysterectomy which is the removal of the uterus.
