Depression is a serious illness. People who suffer from tend to feel worthless, numb, tired, irritable, thoughts of suicide, have difficulty concentration and sleeping, and many other unwelcome symptoms. Unlike just feeling sad or having a rough couple of days, depression doesn’t really go away. Depression sticks with you everyday for long periods of time if not your entire life. There are treatments for depression but a lot of people don’t seek them. Some of the treatments include antidepressant medications and psychotherapy. Sometimes the medications could have the opposite effect, they are supposed to help you feel better. Some people experience harsher symptoms of depression in reaction to the medication and can even be pushed closer to suicide. I think that’s what scares some people into not seeking treatment. Also therapy in general can seem stressful. Either if it’s in a group setting or one on one, talking about what’s wrong can be terrifying. What’s even more terrifying is not knowing what to talk about, sometimes people don’t even know what’s casing them to feel so bad so it adds stress to try and talk about it. I found a quote by a woman named Martha Manning that I think describes depression very well, “Depression is such a cruel punishment. There are no fevers, no rashes, no blood tests to send people scurrying in concern, just the slow erosion of self, as insidious as cancer. And like cancer, it is essentially a solitary experience; a room in hell with only your name on the door.”
